Summary
The documentation is heavily biased towards Windows environments. All backup and recovery procedures rely on Windows-specific tools (MABS console, PowerShell, mountvol.exe, diskshadow.exe, psexec.exe, Net Share, Windows Explorer, VSS Previous Versions), and all examples and instructions assume a Windows Server context. There are no Linux/macOS equivalents or alternative instructions, nor is there any mention of cross-platform support. This creates significant friction for non-Windows users and makes it impossible to follow the documented procedures on Linux or macOS.
Recommendations
- Clearly state in the introduction that MABS is Windows-only and that the procedures are not applicable to Linux/macOS environments.
- If any components (such as SQL Server backup/restore) can be performed from Linux/macOS, provide parallel instructions and examples for those platforms.
- Where possible, mention cross-platform alternatives (e.g., Azure CLI, REST APIs) for backup and restore operations.
- For scripts and command-line examples, offer PowerShell and Bash equivalents if supported.
- Explicitly document platform limitations and provide guidance for hybrid environments.
